As many of us have noticed, a lot of activity is materializing around Alton these days. The town seems to be busily buzzing with new businesses, new events and new revitalizations of old buildings and areas of town.

During November, it was announced that Jacoby Arts Center, The Grand Theatre and The Hotel Stratford were bought by Altonian John Simmons with plans to revitalize the buildings through his company Giant City Properties.

Since all of these happenings are so fresh, not many people actually know what is going to happen in regard to the plans of these beautifully historic buildings.

So, for this quarter’s What’s Up Downtown community meeting, hosted by Alton Main Street, people of the Riverbend traveled to Jacoby Arts Center to find out more. Many local business owners introduced themselves and shared updates on their business. However, since Simmons had a prior engagement, a two-minute video clip recorded earlier was played.

In the video, Simmons, standing inside the rubble of The Grand Theatre, announced he was not sure of the plans of the theater yet and hopes to hear what the community wants the future of the theater to be.

In addition, it would be great to hear opinions on what the other buildings acquired by Giant City Properties should become, including the two upper floors of Jacoby Arts Center and The Stratford Hotel.

This is our time, folks. Let us voice our opinion on what lies ahead, because these actions will impact our futures greatly.
